Body black, with a yellow band on the first and second gastral tergites. Divided into eight subspecies according to region. This wasp, active from May to October, nests in old galleries of wood boring beetles or bamboo tubes, partitioning brood cells with mud. It hunts moth larvae of Pyralidae or Tortricidae, and stores them in the cells as larval food. This wasp is one of the most common species found in trap nests in and around residential areas.
